The Maynard

Full signal and seamless service in the heart of the Peak District

My whole experience of Marston’s Telecoms has been fantastic and I am more than happy to recommend them to anyone.

Project overview

The Maynard Hotel is a 19th century country house hotel in the heart of the Peak District National Park.

It offers 19 bedrooms, a wedding venue for 130 people, a bar seating 50, a restaurant with capacity for 110 and garden seating for 230 — along with a renowned restaurant that has hosted guests including Sir Paul McCartney.

Rob Hattersley, Managing Director, took over The Maynard in late 2019 and set about a wholesale refurbishment.

But connectivity was in the dark ages: creaking Wi-Fi, no EPOS in the restaurant, music from CDs, and phones running on 1980s ISDN technology with bills to match. It was obsolete, underperforming, and still costing a fortune.

The challenge

Rob had worked for Marston’s for 15 years as a General Manager in the premium division and had used Marston’s Telecoms before. When he sought quotes from other providers it became clear that no one else could match the service, and they were more expensive besides — and he didn’t feel the rapport that gave him confidence.

The response

Marston’s Telecoms carried out a full building walkthrough, then provided advice tailored to the business. Because of the size of the premises, the team conducted a survey to determine the state of the existing cabling, the best locations for new data ports, PDQs and printers, and sites for new Wi-Fi access points.

They installed:

  • Two fibre connections — one for guests and one for business use
  • A number of Wi-Fi access points cabled back to a switch in a secure comms cabinet, ensuring coverage throughout the hotel for both guests and staff
  • A hosted voice phone system, significantly cheaper than the previous system and with far more functionality
The whole installation was project managed by the Marston’s Telecoms team.
“Fair, bespoke, efficient and informative.”

The result

The Maynard’s 19 bedrooms, 130-seat wedding venue, 50-seat bar, 110-seat restaurant and 230-seat garden now place huge demands on the telecoms — and the new system provides a seamless experience for all of it:
  • Guests can relax and get away from it all while staying in touch and keeping entertainment at their fingertips
  • Silky-smooth streaming on bedroom smart TVs
  • Zoom meetings and video conferencing, handled without a hitch
  • Faster service through great EPOS — even guests at the end of the garden have their order taken on a tablet and sent straight to the kitchen
In the depths of the Peak District, phone signal is 3G at best and the area suffers from poor Wi-Fi generally — so a strong signal on site means a great deal to guest satisfaction.
“The new system is providing a seamless experience for all.”
The site is now saturated with secure Wi-Fi over two separate networks (private and public), the hosted voice system is fully managed by Marston’s Telecoms, the cabling future-proofs the site for whatever comes next, and all hardware is centralised in one secure comms cabinet.

The verdict

“With Marston’s Telecoms we have the best of both worlds. They are an agile business with a family culture that gets things done quickly and provide a service that is very personalised and tailored, very friendly and efficient. But they also have the backing of Marston’s plc, which brings security. I’m signed up for 24/7/365 support, so no matter the time or day I can get help from a Marston’s Telecoms helpdesk agent. If I have any issues, we’re back up online in minutes.”
“We opened in January 2020 and traded six weeks before the Covid lockdown, but we haven’t just survived, we’ve thrived. In July 2021 I took on a second hotel, The George at Haversage, two miles down the road — and this time the problem was much bigger: terrible Wi-Fi, not enough boosters, and no cabling for EPOS. Guests were complaining on TripAdvisor and Booking.com that they couldn’t get phone signal or Wi-Fi. I didn’t consider any other supplier but Marston’s Telecoms — within days they had reviewed the whole building and come up with great advice and solutions.”
“My whole experience of Marston’s Telecoms has been fantastic, and I am more than happy to recommend them to anyone.”
